We've created this webpage with all of our Golden Spike work samples organized for our application. Below you will find three studio demo recordings of songs from The Golden Spike, videos from our December 2017 Workshop, and our first draft of Act One.
DEMO STUDIO TRACKS OF THE GOLDEN SPIKE
SESSIONs FROM OUR DECEMBER 2017 WORKSHOP
This video clip has three sections:
00:00 - 03:05: We are discussing the introduction into "The Barber Shop" song. We are exploring is the “campfire” aesthetic, where band members would go in and out of character, offering personal confessionals as lead-ins into songs. This embraces the immediate vibe of a concert, as we hope to bridge the “then” of the narrative and the “now” of our contemporary moment.
03:06 - 04:12: This is an exploration of an original railroad work song, with the repeating refrain "Fall Hammer, Fall". We are experimenting what multiple hammers falling on one spike in a syncopated rhythm would be like. We took inspiration from this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n-2YN_Ak9eE
04:13 - 05:16: This is an exploration of adding a woodwind instrument to our sound. In the past, our instruments have only consisted of stringed acoustic instruments. We are very interested in mixing up our instrumentation as we bring on more collaborators.
*SPECIAL NOTE FROM THE PLAYWRIGHT*
Because this draft is a first attempt at weaving character, structure and songs, there are certain gaps in the story with descriptions written in place of some scenes. This is less of a polished script and more of a tentative road map containing sketched out character arcs and dramatic beats.
